National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports all fields of fundamental science and engineering, except for medical sciences, tasked with keeping the United States at the leading edge of discovery. The NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering through grants and cooperative agreements to colleges, universities, K-12 school systems, businesses, informal science organizations, and other research organizations.

It does this through grants, and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities, K-12 school systems, businesses, informal science organizations and other research organizations throughout the United States. The Foundation accounts for about one-fourth of federal support to academic institutions for basic research.
Selected Programs and Initiatives
- Funding Programs for K-12 Educators, Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, and Postdoctoral Fellows provide direct or indirect funding for educators at the each education level and identifies programs that focus on educational developments for these groups, such as curricula development, training, or retention.
Clearinghouses and Technical Assistance
- NSF Publications is a repository of all NSF-published reports, news releases, indicators, and statistical reports on United States science.
